Inside Digital Media: The Future of Electronic Media

Summary: Today’s guest is a market research analyst and consultant for media companies who is located in London. He just completed a report entitled “Broadcast TV and Broadband Video: Collision and Disruption”. It is about 45 pages in length and is available for free download at his website.
Voice & PowerPoint Presentation: http://www.insidedigitalmedia.com

The report first summarizes the current state of the broadcast TV and broadband video industries. It then examines the pressures and innovations that are going to sustain or disrupt the scheduling and distribution of video. It concludes with the observation that our consumption of media will not only be time and place shifted, but that the very sources of content creation will be shifting as well. The underlying trend that is inducing the changes is the migration of intelligence to the edge of the network.

For example, many of us are already familiar with how TiVo is familiarizing the public with the concept of time shifting. We are learning that it is no longer necessary to watch TV programs when the stations choose to broadcast them. TiVo is intelligence at the network edge (in our very homes) that enables us to watch whatever TV programs are of interest to us when we want to watch them.

In the next step of evolution innovations like TiVoToGo and Sling Media enable us to watch our favorite TV programs wherever we happen to be, not merely in our home living rooms. There’s no reason we cannot watch our TV at home from anywhere on the Internet.

Finally, incipient podcasting is showing us how just about anybody can create audio programming and syndicate it over the Internet. However, it is important to note that there is no reason why podcasting must be limited to mere audio. Ultimately original video will be created and distributed via RSS feeds as well by individuals with nothing more than a home computer and a camcorder.
